This Healthy Lifestyles art session encouraged children to explore the relationship between creativity and physical wellbeing—through the dynamic art of wire sculpture. Led by artist and tutor Areej Abdi, the children began by reflecting on their favourite sports and inspirational figures from the world of fitness and athletics.

From footballers and gymnasts to dancers and Olympic heroes, each child chose a sport or personality that they admire. With these inspirations in mind, Areej demonstrated how to build a wire armature—a flexible frame that forms the base of a sculpture. The children eagerly took on the challenge, learning to bend, twist and shape the wire to represent poses that conveyed strength, agility and motion.

Once their wire forms took shape, the next step was to add a ‘skin’—a layer of plain white fabric that brought definition and texture to their figures. The transformation was magical. Sculptures began to resemble athletes mid-stride, dancers in motion, and sportspeople in their element.

But the creativity didn’t stop there. The children then designed and crafted bespoke outfits for their sculptures using a mix of found fabrics and recycled materials. From brightly coloured jerseys to glittering leotards, each outfit was as unique as the young artist who made it. The emphasis on using sustainable materials also offered a valuable opportunity to discuss the importance of recycling and creative reuse in our daily lives.

As they worked, the group engaged in an enriching discussion about what it means to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. They spoke about how sport can build confidence and community, and how athletes can inspire us to set goals, stay active, and take care of our physical and mental health.

This imaginative session brought together creativity, sustainability and wellbeing—three cornerstones of the Healthy Lifestyles project. The wire sculptures now stand as miniature tributes to the energy and dedication of sportspeople everywhere, and to the healthy habits that keep us all moving forward.
