In this Healthy Lifestyles art session, the children dove into the vibrant world of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, whose signature polka dots and bold colours have inspired generations around the globe. To set the scene, we began by watching an introductory YouTube video that offered a fascinating look into Kusama’s life, creative process, and iconic style. Her story and expressive work sparked lively conversation and imaginative ideas among our young artists.
Areej, our session leader and visual arts specialist, then demonstrated how to create modroc sculptures of fruit and vegetables. This hands-on technique involved wrapping and moulding modroc (plaster bandages) around forms to build textured, three-dimensional models. With enthusiasm and creative flair, the children began crafting their own fruits and veggies—from bananas and strawberries to peppers and aubergines.
Once their sculptures dried, it was time to add colour—Kusama-style! The children explored acrylic paints, carefully mixing and blending hues to create their own striking palettes. They applied Kusama’s hallmark technique of pattern repetition—especially dots—to transform their sculptures into vibrant, joyful art pieces bursting with personality.
As they painted, the young artists discovered how layering and blending paints could enhance their pieces, leading to thoughtful experimentation and bold choices. The session not only celebrated creativity but also reinforced healthy eating themes in a fun, engaging way.
We’re incredibly proud of the energy, focus, and originality each child brought to their sculpture. Their finished artworks are a testament to how art can be a joyful medium for learning about health and wellbeing—and for expressing unique creativity.
