The first art session of South Hill Park’s Healthy Lifestyle Project was a creative feast of colours, imagination, and fun as students joined visual arts facilitator Areej to bring healthy living to life through art. With sketchpads and pencils in hand, the young participants discovered how fruits and vegetables could become something truly super: their very own healthy-eating superheroes.

Getting Inspired: A Warm Welcome and Creative Warm-Up

Areej began the session by introducing the project’s vision and setting the tone for an exciting creative journey. To kick things off, the children participated in a playful warm-up exercise—a single-line drawing challenge where they weren’t allowed to lift their pencils off the page. With fruits and vegetables handed out for inspiration, giggles filled the room as wobbly lines turned into unique interpretations of bananas, apples, carrots, and cucumbers. The exercise not only encouraged focus and creativity but reminded everyone that there’s no “right” way to draw—just pure, imaginative fun.

Sketching Healthy Inspiration

After the warm-up, the children were encouraged to draw a fruit or vegetable of their choice with more intention. Whether it was a juicy strawberry or a proud aubergine, the students explored shape, texture, and detail. As they observed their subjects closely, you could see their confidence grow with each line on the page.

Creating Superheroes with a Purpose

Next, it was time to turn these nutritious foods into something extraordinary. Areej demonstrated how to create a healthy-eating superhero, guiding the students on what made a good design: bold shapes, vibrant colours, and creative superpowers that connect to health and wellness. The kids watched in awe as a healthy superhero was born on the board before their eyes.

Then came the highlight of the session: designing their own fruit or veg superhero. The room buzzed with excitement as the children brainstormed names, superpowers, and even home bases for their creations. Some favourites included:

Captain Carrot, whose power was super eyesight and speedy running.

Berry Blast, a strawberry superhero who could shoot vitamin-packed beams to boost energy.

Broccoli Brute, who could build shields to protect others from illness.

With guidance from Areej, the kids added personal touches and flourishes, resulting in a colourful and heroic lineup of superfoods.

Wrapping Up: Fueling Healthy Choices with Knowledge

To end the session, Areej gave a fun and interactive presentation about the five food groups, helping the children understand how positive nutritional choices support overall health. The children enthusiastically shared their ideas on how their superheroes could inspire others to eat more healthily.

A Creative Success

The first art session was an inspiring blend of creativity and education, empowering students to see healthy eating in a new light. By transforming everyday foods into dynamic superheroes, they left with not only works of art but a deeper understanding of how nutrition can fuel their own “superpowers.”

Stay tuned for more updates as these young artists continue their creative journey!
